Johnny Copeland played at the 1985 Montreux Jazz Festival as a guest with Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. Copeland was plagued by ill health caused by a congenital heart defect during his later years. He died from complications six months after receiving a heart transplant in Harlem, New York at age 60.
